Ashton L. Stewart papers, 1790-1967.

Papers of Ashton L. Stewart, a lawyer who represented the Recreation and Park Commission of Baton Rouge Parish, La., in its lawsuit against Al H. German in the 19th Judicial District Court. The lawsuit involved the Commission's attempts to purchase the Prince Murat House (now known as the Magnolia Mound Plantation House), then situated on land owned by German, and move it to another site. The papers include photocopies of deeds, wills, and land sales that trace the ownership of the Prince Murat house through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; minutes of meetings of the Recreation and Park Commission regarding the proposed purchase of the house; correspondence concerning efforts of historians to establish whether Murat actually ever lived in the house; resumes of house appraisers and forestry specialists who consulted on the case; planning and zoning maps; and several color photographs of the house dating from 1966.
